Skin Tags

Skin tags are a common medical condition and appear all over the body. A skin tag usually starts off as a small growth of skin and it is when it is in its early stages, that skin tag removal is easy. There are many treatments available for removing skin tags.

These skin tags can occur on the eyelids, nose, cheek, neck, armpits, upper chest and even the groin – usually where the skin is looser and more relaxed. • Electrocautery – this is where the tag is cut off and the skin electrically burned to close the wound. This procedure is suitable when skin tags have been allowed to grow large because it staunches the bleeding afterwards and helps the healing process to go quickly. A local anesthetic is necessary and any wounds will be dressed and be kept clean and covered until completely healed.
• Laser treatment – this is particularly useful in getting rid of anal skin tags as lasers are very precise and the anal area can be re-surfaced at the same time giving a good smooth finish.
• Legation – this method is where a thread is wrapped around the base of the skin tag thereby cutting off the blood supply. This method has been used for centuries and eventually, the tag will be shed with the minimum amount of pain or damage to the skin. The downside is that it can look rather off-putting if the skin tag is in a visible area.

It is important for you to know that skin tags are not cancerous and, except in the case of anal skin tags, they are not a symptom of some larger underlying medical condition. We do know that more women than men get skin tags and that their appearance is more likely with age, diabetes and obesity.
